Evidence has been found in the latest beta of macOS Big Sur that Apple plans to bring FaceID to Mac devices. A code snippet hinted that we may see the secure face unlock option in Macs soon.
When Apple introduced FaceID biometric authentication technology in the iPhone X, a snippet with the project's internal name like "PearlCamera" was found in the iOS update and the developers have now found references to " PearlCamera "in macOS Big Sur Developer Beta 3.
According to Mac 9to5, the beta of macOS also revealed codes such as "FaceDetect" and "BioCapture" indicating that Apple is working on introducing the biometric face unlock option in MacBooks.
However, the project is in its early stages of implementation and it may take some time for Apple to add FaceID in MacBooks.
With FaceID, MacBooks would get even better in terms of security and it would also become convenient for users to unlock their device.
One of the best implementations could be seen in the iMac, as MacBook Air and MacBook Pro already have a TouchID biometric authentication system built into the built-in keyboard. Since iMacs don't have built-in keyboards, FaceID would make the most of them.
One of the main steps in introducing FaceID in MacBooks would be the addition of the Neural Engine, as it is one of the main components for analyzing face data. Recently, Apple announced that it was abandoning Intel chips in favor of its in-house chipsets.
Apple's first MacBook with Apple Silicon will arrive later this year and it could include FaceID according to current speculation.
