Apple today announced M1 Ultra, the most powerful arm-based custom processor designed for the new Mac Studio desktop computer.

M1 Ultra is basically two Max M1 chips that are connected along with new interconnecting architecture called Apple Ultrafusi. It uses silicon interposer that provides 2.5TB / s bandwidth. It reduces the concern for latency and bandwidth compared to two separate chips connected through the motherboard.

Because basically doubling the M1 Max resources, M1 Ultra displays a 20-core CPU, a 64-core GPU, and a 32-core neural machine, which all doubled from M1 Max.

As usual, Apple has several performance numbers for us to chew. M1 Ultra claims to offer 90% higher performance for the same power consumption as Intel Core i9-12900k and can match the peak performance of Intel by using fewer 100W. M1 Ultra is also quite strong than 12900K in multi-threaded tasks, although Apple does not specify the right task.

In terms of GPU performance, the 64-core model consumes 200W less than NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 on its peak performance while also outperforming NVIDIA cards. Again, Apple does not determine with the task achieved.

Memory bandwidth on ultra M1 is also higher than the previous model, reaching 800GB / s. M1 Ultra can be configured with integrated memory up to 128GB. Like other M1 models, all collection of memory can be accessed by the CPU and GPU.

Due to doubling media machine blocks, M1 Ultra can also do some things that are crazy enough when it comes to media decoding, including being able to replay up to 18 Video streams 8K Prores 422 simultaneously. It also has support for up to five views, four of which can be 6K Pro Display XDR along with the fifth 4K display.

Finally, in the case of software, ultra m1 will appear on the application as a single processor, which means all programs will run and scale automatically without having to be changed. In addition, MacOS has been designed to scale with hardware, so it can also automatically utilize the performance of chip performance.
