App Review: Bird Codes

Bird Codes was created to assist birders in the field when taking field notes. Instead of writing down the full name of a species, it is much easier to jot down the four letter alpha code. This app is also helpful when you are reading through various birding listservs, blog posts, etc. and come across a new alpha code that you have not seen before. This actually happened to me today when I received a comment on a iPodscoping post that I wrote yesterday. Here is the comment:

“Phonoscoping as I like to call it. Tried to iPhonoscope some PAGPs yesterday and couldn’t freaking do it. Shaky hands I guess.”

App Review: Bird Codes

I tried for a good five or ten minutes trying to figure out what species PAGP represented. Here was my first chance to try out this new app, Bird Codes. I opened up the app and searched for PAGP and it gave me Pacific Golden-Plover. Awesome. Instead of getting on the computer and punching in PAGP, I picked up my iPod Touch and within seconds I had my answer.

This is a great addition to any apple device if you are a birder and I recommend it to birders of all skill levels. It’s an easy app to use and can be purchased for iPod Touch, iPhone, of iPad with iOS of 3.0 or newer.

Disclosure: I would like to thank Nemesis Code for providing me a review copy of this app.
