September 2018

An extremely rare opportunity to photograph the world’s largest airplane presented itself when word got out that the An-225 would be coming into Oakland International Airport to pick up disaster relief supplies before heading out to Honolulu and Guam.  The An-225 was designed to airlift the Energia rocket’s boosters and the Buran orbiter for the Soviet space program.  It is powered by six turbofan engines and is the heaviest aircraft ever built, with a maximum takeoff weight of 1.4 million pounds.  This aircraft first flew in 1988 and only one was ever completed, with a second partially built.  Nikon D500 w/Tamron 150-600mm.
