With season six of “True Blood” starting on HBO on June 16th you have to wonder how new mom to twins Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse) has time to even breathe. Along with working on “True Blood” she has been working on other projects like “X-Men: Days of Future Past”. But it seems like that is something she understands about the job.
“Sleep’s not a very big part of my life right now. But that’s fine. It’s kind of part of the deal. This is one of the jobs where you don’t get to pick the timing, and when it rains, it pours. When there are interesting things happening and interesting people you want to work with, you kind of jump on it and figure out the details, which thankfully have all kind of fallen into place. And then I’ve had a really, really awesome last few months.”
We of course know Anna Paquin as playing Sookie Stackhouse in “True Blood” which was created by Alan Ball. But of course we all know Charlaine Harris was the one to create the whole series as books first (which the last book in the series was just released). So how did she prepare for her character that we have grown to love over the years?
“I read the books and obviously that was very helpful, but [TV’s] Sookie was created by Alan and our writers-the way she has grown has felt like a natural and collaborative process.”
Of course last season left off in a very different place then we all thought so what does she have to think about that and the new season that really is only a few weeks away?
“Thinks left off in a pretty serious place in regards to where Eric and I leave Bill having just turned into this creature of the blood with these monster fangs-and who the hell knows what that is? So obviously, that situation has to [play] out. And we have new cast members this year, and that’s always fun to have fresh blood, if you’ll pardon the pun. This season, the writers and I have been making a concerted effort to help Sookie grow up, become a little bit darker, more accepting of her fate, more self-knowing.”
Along with working with her husband and father of her twins Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) they teamed up to work on a indie film called “Free Ride”.
“We just thought it was a fascinating piece of material and really exciting new talent to work with [writer-director Shana Betz]…we kind of muscled on through and got it done. Small indie films that are labors of love are not easy, but absolutely worth it on every level once you’ve got the final product.”
With having a huge career in this business at such a young age (winning an Oscar in 1993 for “The Piano”) she has been able to stay grounded and keep the jobs coming to her. That could be because she does it not for the fame or for the money but for the passion she has for the job she is doing.
“I’ve been really blessed. I’ve never really been drawn to things because I wanted to be famous or huge or anything. I’d rather do one day’s work on a movie that is really creatively interesting than be in every single frame of something that I find a little dull. I feel like that guided my choices a lot and I’ve consequently been drawn to people who, in the best possible way, kind of kicked my ass, because I didn’t want to be the weak link.”
