When I first read this book I was addicted. It was funny, brash, and didn't shy away from the silliness and absolute mortification of being a teenage girl.
I could relate to Georgia because I was thirteen when I read this book, attended an all-girls school and had a two-year-old little sister at the time so there were several parallels in our lives. Re-reading it now, it's still as funny as ever if not overly ridiculous.
I did hate her on occasion, she was selfish, downright rude. The only way I can forgive these things it because it was diary format and come on, a teenagers we've all written things in our diaries as a way to vent our frustrations that we didn't necessarily mean. Or at least the angsty group of us did. Come on Georgia give me a chance to new to New Zealand any day! It's gorgeous there you middle earth hating girl.
What I think I love about this book is how honest is was. Unlike say, a Babysitter's Club wholesome thirteen-year-old stories, it was more of a true revelation of the high school experience. She is faced with smoking mean girls who talk about sex and their underwear all the time.
Her family life is hilarious and ridiculous but just sort of perfectly dysfunctional. Angus her massive, half wild animal cat is a force of his own to be reckoned with. I do have to say that Georgia's life is more on the mature side of being fourteen, even if she's not mature at all. She's going to parties, clubs, bands etc.
At fourteen, I was going to soccer practice, dance, movies, and sleepovers. My parents would never have allowed me so do half the stuff Georgia gets away with. I should add my sisters are now twelve and fourteen and the same goes for them. We're living on the side of The Babysitter's Club. Still it's a fun read and I think it kind of shows how not great all these things can be so young as well because well, let's face it Georgia's life is pretty much a disaster. The girl shaves her eyebrow off and shows up to a party as a stuffed olive. I repeat MORTIFYING.
I think everyone should give this book a read it's light, funny, and gives you a glimpse into English life, slang.
