Scottish tennis great Andy Murray has been accused of being a bit of a cold fish – but that was before he shared a hug with an exuberant 11-year-old boy after he beat Swiss star Roger Federer to take an Olympic gold medal at Centre Court Wimbledon on Sunday.
Murray’s 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Federer came exactly four weeks after his defeat by the very same at Wimbledon and his joy was evident. However, his excitement may have been matched by the joy of 11-year-old Henry Caplan, who tore through the stands at Wimbledon to give Murray a hug. Caplan, from Blackmore, Essex, told The Daily Mail later, “I was just so happy. I had to let him know. I’m his biggest fan and I didn’t want to miss my chance.’
It was a “magic moment”, declared a misty-sounding Paul Harris at The Mail, in which “Britain’s feelgood barometer soared after a weekend during which the country, quite simply, went Olympics daft.” How could it not?Watch Caplan hug his hero:
