This week we heard more about Apple's Fortnite issues on the Apple News. Not only are iPhones with Fortnite already installed in the second-hand market for thousands of dollars, but Apple is also hiring some high-profile lawyers to prepare for a big fight.
In other Apple news, we heard some rumors about the iPhone 12 battery, its possible release date (though we have doubts), a new repair program for Macs, and news related to broadcasts on the Apple TV Plus service.
Please see the Apple News summary below for the latest information.
Last week's top Apple news:
- The war between Fortnite and Apple continues: Earlier this week, Apple stood firm against Epic Games - the inventor of the massive gaming hit Fortnite - over the guidelines of the Apple App Store. In a statement too Bloomberg's Mark GurmanApple said it won't make an exception for Epic [Games] because we don't think it's right to put their business interests before policies that protect our customers. "
- Apple hires a company that helped fight Samsung: Remember when Apple and Samsung stabbed each other's throats in court? Well, Apple just hired the same company it used on those litigation to win the Fortnite battle. Gibson Dunn directed the battle between Apple and Samsung and advised at the same time against Apple in battle with Qualcomm. Lawyers, amirite?
- Fortnite-Enabled iPhones That Selling For Big Bucks: While you can't currently get Fortnite from the Apple App Store, you can still play it if you already have it installed on your phone. Entrepreneurs are taking advantage of this by selling iPhones with Fortnite for thousands of dollars. People really love Fortnite.
- iPhone 12 battery board could be simpler (cheaper): The upcoming 5G powered iPhone 12 devices will be expensive to develop. Allegedly Apple is trying to keep manufacturing costs down to avoid consumer prices from getting too high. Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple could use a lower quality battery as part of its cost-cutting efforts. It's not clear how this could affect iPhone battery life, but it's interesting nonetheless.
- Apple makes fans nervous about the possible launch date for the iPhone: Apple's official YouTube channel has uploaded a live stream placeholder titled "TEST". While this isn't a big deal, the live stream date was September 10th. Could this be the date of the iPhone 12 Live Stream launch? A lot of people thought so, but we don't buy it. September 10th is a Thursday and Apple almost always starts on Tuesdays. Also, September 10th was last year's launch date, so this "test" video is likely just a clone from last year. Go on, there is nothing to see here.
- Independent repair program for Macs extended: It has long been debated that it is difficult to get an Apple product repaired by a company other than Apple. However, the company just added Macs to its independent repair provider program. So far, only iPhones out of warranty have been covered. That's a good change!
- Get ready for a country music competition show: Apple just signed a deal for a new music competition show that focuses on country music. My Kind of Land (ugh) will be Apple TV Plus exclusive. No release date has been announced.
- Apple renews Ted Lasso after just one week: Jason Sudeikis comedy Ted Lasso is exclusive to Apple TV Plus. Less than a week after the show premiered, positive press caused Apple to renew it for a second season. The second season is on a quick schedule with a start date for next year.
