Andrex - Being Eco Friendly

Posted on the 15 September 2013 by Maxwell1212 @MummyToTheMax
Andrex Eco is working with renowned eco-designer Oliver Heath to educate us Brits about the ‘little things’ we can all do around our homes to help us live sustainably. Andrex Eco recently sent me a bundle of goodies which are Oliver’s top items that make eco-living easy in the home. We were asked to use the items in our daily life and see what impact they made on us.

Andrex provided me with the following items:
  • Andex Eco toilet paper
  • Recycling bin for the bathroom
  • Hippo water saving bag
  • Canvas bag
  • Shower timer
  • Candle
I FoundI normally buy branded toilet paper with my grocery shop however I never thought about the impact it would have on the world around us. I normally go for what is on offer however since we have had Andrex Eco toilet paper in our lives I will think more when doing my shop. The Andrex toilet roll is as soft and friendly as any toilet paper however it is eco. The toilet paper is sustainable toilet tissue made from a completely new and innovative combination of sustainably sourced fibres; 90% recycled fiber and 10% natural bamboo. The packaging is also 100% recycled.

With Ben and I the only people using the bathroom regularly in the house we find we tend to recycle the plastic and the cardboard tubes that the loo roll comes on however sometimes we can forget.  This week we simply added the bin, we were sent in the bathroom and at the end of the week we recycled all the empty toilet tubes and old plastic packaging. Adding a bin to the bathroom ensured we were disposing recycled items properly.
Most toilets don’t need to use a full cistern to flush effectively and we were sent a Hippo water saver to try out. Since installing the bag I have found that it saves us 2-3 litres of water per flush. It is a simple bag which is easy to fit. I love the bag as not only does it save us money but it also means we are helping the environment.
We were sent a lovely strong canvas bag which I was really happy about. I used it when I went to fetch a few goodies from the shop this week that I would sometimes have to double bag when using a carrier bag to ensure the plastic did not split on my way home. The government are now telling people by 2014 they would like supermarkets to charge 5p per plastic bag to help the environment. If this does come into force I would suggest to any of my readers to get themselves a lovely strong canvas bag which they can use over and over again, it will not only save you money but it is also very eco friendly.
Ben and I love long showers as well as baths. We recently stopped having baths all the time as we simply could not afford the water bill after we were put on a meter however sometimes when taking a shower we manage to take a extra long one which not only affects our water bill but the environment. We were sent a shower timer in our box of goodies and the timer was my favorite item. It has been the most used item in the house since it has arrived and I would reccomend anyone looking to help the environment and save themselves some money to get one.

I rarely get any me time at night but on the occasional night that I do I love to sit down and relax. In my box of goodies I found a beautiful candle which will not only send me into a relaxed mode but also will save my electricity bills as I will not be forced to turn bright lights on, instead I am able to light up my room with pretty candles.
ConclusionOverall this week has been a real eye opener. I did not know that a series of small steps could help the environment as well as my own bills. I think being eco is something we should all look at, to make the world a better place and keep it well for the sake of our children and their children!
