…And About Crossovers in Anime

Anime Crossovers

It’s been a long time since I had talked about crossovers. As in, over two years ago. And I thought I’d be done talking about crossovers as well. But then Kai ended up doing a crossover post and talked about Fairy Tail X Rave. Then Kai went and suggested I go write about crossovers again, but with different content. So I had to think about what I’d want to write about since my first crossover post. Well, this isn’t going to be terribly hard; I’ll just talk a bit about the crossovers since that post (in no order), and then wonder if this is the direction anime will be going in more often.

Lupin III Vs Detective Conan The Movie

Well we presumed after the first Lupin III Vs Detective Conan special that we’d be done. Wellllll not so much, since they’re now going to have a movie. I should probably point out the OVA was pretty poor. In the end, you know you can’t have one of these two main characters of their respective franchises lose, so of course it’ll just end weirdly. In movie format, we’ll have to see if they manage to even things out for each character appropriately.

Gintama x Sket Dance, Sket Dance x Gintama

Gintama X Sket Dance

I had actually talked about these crossovers back when celebrating Gintama’s return to the TV last Fall. For ease, here’s how I rated them:

Gintama x Sket Dance by Sorachi: Meh
Sket Dance x Gintama by Shinohara: HELL YEAH
Gintama x Sket Dance by Sunrise: HELL YEAH
Sket Dance x Gintama by Tatsunoko: Bleh

So it’s weird, but that’s how my ratings go. I blame the fact that I just did not find the first 3 episodes of Sket Dance that I had watched funny so of course I didn’t like the anime version of that, and Sorachi didn’t seem to do the best of jobs with the manga compared to the one Shinohara did. Oh well. But that’s another crossover since my 2011 post.

One Piece x Toriko

Toriko x One Piece

Didn’t actually watch this one (though that’s mostly because I’m not a big fan of Toriko), but there, another anime crossover.

One Piece x Toriko x Dragonball Z

One Piece x Toriko x Dragonball Z

I should have found time to watch this, but of course I haven’t. What can I say? But based on pictures I’ve seen, it probably involves all three of the main characters eating like crazy. So yeah, nothing new, but of course there’d be nothing new!

Fairy Tail x Rave

Fairy-Tail x Rave

I think I read the manga of this. I don’t remember much of it. That probably tells you what I think of it. I’ve actually read Fairy Tail before. I stopped collecting volumes around 24, and have little desire to go back at any point. Rave I’ve only watched some of the anime back when it used to be on Cartoon Network (and late at night). So I get most of what’s going on. So I might take a peek at the anime crossover at some point.

Carnival Phantasm

Carnival Phantasm

Basically Type-Moon characters in a shared universe. Or more importantly, in one that’s intended for laughs. It counts as a suitable crossover.

So, how about more anime crossovers?

As you can see, there hasn’t been more anime crossovers since my post, but there’s definitely a decent amount in manga form (like that Nisekoi x Ore Monogatari thing for example). I am weak to crossovers. Just the idea of a bunch of characters from different universes coming together appeals to me greatly. (That’s why I have Street Fighter x Tekken and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3…even though I don’t play them that much. Well, there’s always Smash Bros.) Of course their stories are pretty crappy, but that comes with the territory. So I’d welcome more anime crossovers…even if they just plain suck (I expect not too much). So if you’re interested in more anime crossovers, feel free to say so! …Or if you think they should go to hell, you can say that too. Just expect someone to bite back. Or not.
