An Unfamiliar Familiar Scene

The Last Supper through Muslim eyes

The photograph below was produced by London-based Faisal Abdu-Allah in 2003.  However, despite my fascination with depictions of the Last Supper, this is the first time I have seen it. Please CLICK on it to take you to a bigger version on the artist’s own website, where you can also see another version of the same scene.

Two things strike me immediately. None of the models in the picture are wearing costumes – just the dress they would customarily wear to the mosque. This is a reminder that the last supper was clothed in ordinariness long before anyone realised how extraordinary it was. Note also that the woman immediately to the right of Jesus seems to be the only one who sees the hidden knife and realises that foul play is afoot.

What do you see?
