Donald Trump's announcement that he's nominating devout Catholic, Amy Coney Barrett to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court, has brought attention to a secret community "People Of Praise" that she reportedly belongs to.
According to its website, the group, which was founded in South Bend in 1971 and has 1,700 members, describes itself as a community that "shares our lives together." "We read Scripture together." " We share meals together" and "support each other financially and materially and spiritually".
In 2017, The New York Times published a story highlighting Ms. Coney Barrett's connection to the People of Praise. It reported that members of the group are assigned same-sex advisers who act as life coaches, helping members discern important life choices. The article reported that male mentors are called "heads" and said that the female mentors were called "handmaids," though it later noted that the term handmaid had been dropped by that point, in favor of "woman leader."
Barrett has said that she is a "faithful Catholic" but that her religious beliefs would not "bear in the discharge of my duties as a judge".
