Amsterdam In Black and White

By Gail Aguiar @ImageLegacy

Amsterdam, NL

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve been in Amsterdam (six?), but what I do remember is that all the trips coincided with the coldest months of the year (December to March). The timing just turned out that way, but I can imagine Dutch people wondering what keeps me coming back… it’s certainly not the leafless trees and fifty shades of winter grey. But the weather has never been a priority for my leisure travel; in the past, I always travelled on my own and coordinated travel to meet up with my friends. Things that I travel for such as architecture and people, food and traditions can be appreciated at any time of the year, and I can always find something to do when the weather turns.

Certainly, there is something to be said for the colour pop of spring, when the flowers and trees of the northern climates begin to wake up and the harsh winter light begins to soften. But I’m also an advocate for the stillness of winter, when the colours are muted, you’re far less likely to get run over by a bike, and the canals of Amsterdam are quiet enough to see reflections on the water.
