Americans Know That Wealth Inequality Is Growing In U.S.
Posted on the 01 February 2018 by JobsangerDonald Trump would have Americans believe that the American economy is fair to everyone, and will be even fairer now that his tax plan has been passed. He even called that tax plan a "middle class tax cut", even though almost all of the cuts went to the rich and to corporations.
I think most people are happy that they will get a few more dollars in their paychecks this year, but that does not mean they think the economy is fair (or that Trump's tax plan was fair). In fact, this new poll shows just the opposite. By a huge 36 point margin, the public believes the wealth inequality is increasing -- not decreasing. And they don't believe the rich pay their fair share of taxes in this country.
The people know that the economic playing field (thanks to GOP policies) is tilted to favor the rich, and they understand that Trump's tax plan will just make that worse.
The charts above are from a new Economist / YouGov Poll -- done between January 28th and 30th of a random national sample of 1,500 adults (including 1,264 registered voters). The margin of error for adults is 3 points, and for registered voters is 2.9 points.
