The American singer, songwriter, producer, and actor, Mariah Carey’s mother, Patricia and sister, Alison, passed away on the same day over the weekend. However, it was unclear what caused their deaths, and exactly when they died.

Carey, in a social media statement, stated, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”

Further, she shared that she was able to spend the last week with her mother. She added, “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Patricia Carey, who established herself as a pop music star, was a Juilliard-trained opera singer, and vocal coach. She was married to Alfred Roy Carey, who was half-Venezuelan and half-black. Following marriage, the couple was blessed with two daughters, Alison and Mariah, and a son, Morgan Carey. In 2002, Alfred Carey succumbed to a prolonged illness.

Mariah Carey has spoken about the struggles she faced for being a biracial child raised in Long Island. She wrote about the same in the long memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

The long memoir was dedicated to her twins, Monroe and Moroccan Cannon, and her late mother. In the memoir, she stated, “And to Pat, my mother, who through it all, I do believe did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”

In the same memoir, Mariah also stated about the strained relationship she had with her mother and siblings. She wrote that at times she felt like “an A.T.M. with a wig on” to her family.

At one point, when Carey was exhausted, she sought refuge at a cabin she had purchased for her mother, who reacted by informing the cops. Carey wrote, “She gave them an odd, knowing look which felt like the equivalent of a secret-society handshake, some sort of white-woman-in-distress cop mode.”

Besides her mother, Carey’s relationship with her sister was also strained. Her elder sister, Alison Carey, passed away in her home in Green County, New York. Media sources state that at the time of death, Carey was 63.

Carey, in her memoir, mentioned her traumatic relationship with her sister and stated that she “drugged her with Valium, offered a pinkie nail full of cocaine, inflicted her with third-degree burns and tried to sell her to a pimp.”
