American Kitchen Stories

There's just something magical about the kitchen. Since following GE Appliances' Our American Kitchen stories, I've been really aware of how important the kitchen is in the American family life. Just tonight, my extended family (all 20 of us) were jammed into my parent's kitchen for Sunday dinner. This morning, my girls woke me up begging for our Sunday morning waffle breakfast. Last night, my girlfriends and I gathered in a friend's new kitchen over appetizers and cocktails.

There's something about a kitchen. I thought maybe it was the food, but I don't think it is. I think it's about ritual, comfort, family... when I wake up in the morning, I head to the kitchen. Before I go to bed at night, I tidy up the kitchen and start the dishwasher. The hum of the dishwasher is familiar, soothing, and just sounds like home. A dishwasher makes me feel that way, you guys!

But there's more.

My blog was born in my kitchen.

Weeknight family dinners of simple meals like spaghetti, meatloaf and chili are nostalgic but routine and you better bet that at 7pm on a night a home, my family will all be gathered around the kitchen island. My kitchen is the CENTER of my home.

This video about Maryann, the Cookie Lady (who is totally adorable) shows how she has spent her life in the kitchen, making people happy - making people cookies! Have a look:

Maryann the Cookie Lady is part of the documentary series exploring the diversity of the American kitchen called Our American Kitchen. The documentaries explore how real GE appliance owners, as genuine representatives of Americans and the American experience, are living their lives. All of our kitchen experiences are different, but I bet that at the center of yours, you will have a similar experience as mine.
Kitchens are magical like that.
