Amazon doubles one of the Prime Video streaming service's greatest strengths: aggressive pricing.
The e-commerce giant launched the Prime Video Mobile Edition on Wednesday, an even cheaper tier of the on-demand video streaming service that now also offers additional benefits.
Prime Video Mobile Edition, for which Amazon has partnered with the Indian telecommunications network Airtel, offers customers in India 28 days of standard SD (single definition) access only for mobile devices for 89 rupees (US $ 1.22) . This tier also includes 6 GB of mobile data that customers can use during the subscription period. For everyone who subscribes to Prime Video Mobile Edition, Amazon will select the tab for the first month.
The new Prime Video plan is currently only available in India. The launch comes two years after Netflix unveiled a similar plan in India.
Affordable prices are key for on-demand steam services entering India, the world's second largest internet market. Even with more than 700 million users online in the country today, only a fraction of them currently pay to access digital subscriptions. In a recent report to customers, Goldman Sachs analysts estimated that the Indian gaming and video streaming market could complete 25 gross value transactions worth up to $ 5 billion by fiscal year.
"India is one of our fastest growing areas in the world with very high engagement rates. With this response, we would like to bring our popular entertainment content to an even greater number of Indian customers. With high mobile broadband penetration in the country, the cell phone has become one of the most popular streaming devices, "said Jay Marine, vice president of Amazon Prime Video Worldwide, in a statement.
Airtel is the first rollout partner for Prime Video Mobile Edition and has proposed to partner with other telecommunications giants to "extend the reach of our service to the entire prepaid customer base in India". said Sameer Batra, director of mobile business development at Amazon. No word on when or if Amazon plans to expand Prime Video Mobile Edition outside of India.
