All’s Not Faer(y) in Love and War on True Blood

True Blood's Sookie Stackhouse travels to faery land in season 4What’s a girl to do when she’s basically vampire crack? In tomorrow’s season 4 premiere of True Blood, we’ll see exactly what Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) has been doing since we last saw her glowing off to faery land, and while we’ve seen the first eight minutes of the first episode already, we’re certain that nothing will prepare us for what creator Alan Ball surely has in store for fans. One of the best parts? Faeries are not what they appeared to be in season 3. They aren’t just about twirling around and dancing half naked (or naked) while exclaiming how happy they are, yet, Ball had to initially portray them in such a manner so that when it’s revealed how incredibly violent faeries can be, the audience would be shocked – right?

Everyone seems to come out of the woodwork to get a taste of Sookie. It doesn’t hurt that each and every one of them are sexy beasts, and we have a hard time feeling bad for Sookie when she’s crying over love lost, and yet there’s another equally gorgeous man standing in line to comfort her and take her pain away. Is it the fae in her that makes men fall at her feet, or is it that Sookie truly is so very regular that the abnormal supernatural beings just want a regular girl next door (that happens to be attractive with a body that won’t quit)?

All this talk about faeries does have us wondering how Ball will deviate from the books. Bookies know that Sookie is a descendant of the sky faeries and that the water fairies are enemies of her great-grandfather, Niall (who do you think is going to play this character in the show?), and of course, enemies of Sookie’s considering what happened to her parents. So, the bookie in us took note when we saw Claudine (Lara Pulver) descend into faery land through a very deep pool of water. Ball has a knack for creative foreshadowing, but he also has an amazing knack for trickery, so it’s really anyone’s guess what he plans to do with the faery storyline (not to mention that pesky fae war…how’s that going to play out?).

True Blood's Eric, Sookie, and Bill
Faeries and sexy beasts aside, there’s no denying that above all, love, lust, heartbreak and angst will be at the heart of season 4, just as it has the past three seasons. The tension between Sookie and Bill (Stephen Moyer), the attraction between Sookie and Eric (Alexander Skarsgård), the domestic challenges Hoyt (Jim Parrack) and Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) will face, Sam (Sam Trammell) and Luna (Janina Gavankar) delving into a relationship, the evil baby that will inevitably come between Arlene (Carrie Preston) and Terry (Todd Lowe)… You get the picture. It’s what love and heartache does to these characters that make them have an even more difficult time figuring out who or what they are, which in turns makes them even sexier beasts to one another.

The question on everyone’s lips the past three seasons has definitely been “what are you?” That won’t end in season 4, and for Sookie, it will get even more exhausting. Each season every single character’s answer to this question has changed, so what will their answers be this season? Tune in tomorrow night at 9PM EST to find out.
