All Natural Toothpaste

By Shannon Miles @milesholistic

It is funny how certain questions come in waves… I have had a lot of inquires lately about how I make my own toothpaste, or as some call it, “tooth soap.”

Like most families, we have had our run with all the “name brand” toothpastes out there. Yes – all the ones that say:  “toxic if swallowed.”  We also have a 2-year old and a 3-year old who are still learning how to brush and work with toothpaste.  And as most parents of little ones know, this particular age likes to “play” with toothpaste, often times resulting in eating or swallowing it.

As we made changes to a more natural lifestyle, we switched to the more natural commercial toothpaste like Toms of Maine. After our time with Toms, we switched to Earthpaste. We actually love Earthpaste, but it was only a matter of time before we started making our own toothpaste, lotions, laundry soap, etc.

This recipe is based on Bentonite Clay, which we are huge fans of. Not only does it bind to (and draw out) heavy metals and toxins, but it is alkaline and full of minerals. Bentonite Clay can be taken internally to help remove toxins, so it is certainly safe for my family’s mouths.

Mountain Rose Herbs explains it this way:

“Bentonite is very unusual in the fact that once it becomes hydrated, the electrical and molecular components of the clay rapidly change and produce an “electrical charge”. Its highest power lies in the ability to absorb toxins, impurities, heavy metals and other internal contaminants. Bentonite clay’s structure assists it in attracting and soaking up poisons on its exterior wall and then slowly drawing them into the interior center of the clay where it is held in a sort of repository.”

Print Prep time 5 mins Total time 5 mins   This is a simple, all-natural toothpaste recipe. It is meant to be a guide or starting point. Feel free to adjust ingredient amounts, and change essential oils, to your preference. This recipe makes enough to provide our family of five with a month’s worth of toothpaste. Author: Simply Smiles Recipe type: Body Care Ingredients
  • ½ cup bentonite clay (I use Mountain Rose Herbs)
  • 5-6 oz. hot, purified water
  • ¾ tsp. unrefined sea salt
  • 40-50 drops liquid Stevia (powdered would work fine, too)
  • 20-25 drops Cinnamon essential oil (or other oil preference)
  • 10 drops Tea Tree essential oil
  • (optional: add a few tablespoons of coconut oil)
Instructions
  1. Mix all ingredient in a ceramic bowl with a wooden spoon.
  2. Store in glass, ceramic or silicone container of choice.

I want to quickly note that when you are mixing and storing the toothpaste be sure to only use ceramic, glass, or silicone.  Plastic or metal is a big no-no. Wet bentonite clay carries a negative polarity that changes to positive when it comes in contact with metal. As a detoxifying agent, it can pull toxins out of plastics and absorb them into your toothpaste. So, yes, be sure to mix in a ceramic bowl and use a wooden spoon.

Please let me know if you give this a try. I would love to hear about the variations that you come up with!
