Aliens: Dark Descent – A Promising Horror Strategy Game Hindered by Glitches

Posted on the 21 June 2023 by Jitender Sharma

Aliens: Dark Descent is a fine blend of horror and real-time strategy. It arrived on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC on June 20, 2023. The game offers a spooky and enjoyable experience, which some say is one of a kind. But there are irritating glitches that detract quite a bit from its actual impact.

According to OpenCritic “Aliens: Dark Descent” has gotten a score of 77/100 from 18 reviewers. Though this is not far above average, it marks an improvement over its predecessor, “Aliens: Fireteam Elite,” which had a score of 68/100. The first game released in 2021.

In terms of gameplay, story, and visuals, the game has achieved what it sought. But technical glitches often disrupt gameplay and necessitate re-playing entire missions. A reviewer said that of their 30 hours of total game time at least a few hours were spent re-doing bugged out missions.

A reviewer said, “In my first attempted playthrough, the game failed to mark an objective as completed and move on to the next. I searched for hours trying to figure out what survivor I had missed. When I realized it was a bug, my autosave files didn’t go back far enough for me to recover the game, forcing me to restart. It happened again almost 15 hours in, and while I was able to roll back my save, I consequently lost all of my hard-fought resources.

Nonetheless, “Aliens: Dark Descent” gives a fresh and inventive retouch to the strategic aspects of the game.

The writing and character development do not reach the same mark as the environment and the feel of the game. The boss battles seemed rather anticlimactic considering the tension built up throughout the game.

“Aliens: Dark Descent” is the best “Aliens” game so far. It captures the essence of leading a group of Colonial Marines against terrifying odds. The fusion horror and tension into a strategy game is beyond admirable. A strong survival element is introduced by the inclusion of permanent maps and resources.
