Story: Alien Romulus starts when a small group of friends decide to investigate a potential escape route from their mining community. Rain (Spaeny), Andy (Jonsson), Tyler (Renaux), Kay (Merced), Bjorn (Fearn) and Navarro (Wu) believe they can find sleeping pods to get them to a better life.

However, once they board the ship, they discover alien creatures waiting for their latest victims. It leads to a frantic race to escape while being hunted and picked off, with a ticking clock before disaster strikes.

Verdict on Alien Romulus

Alien Romulus is a sci-fi horror, leaning much more back into the horror the original stands the test of time for. It follows a small group of miners searching for a chance of a better life. However, their search leads them to a dangerous place, unleashing aliens to hunt them down.

This movie returns to the horror roots, where we find a small group of people needing to fight off an alien. However, unlike the original trained team, we get a group of young people desperately searching for a chance of a new life. They have smarts from working in horrendous conditions and spending more time in darkness. Even though we get the typical idiotic team member, yes, I’m talking to you Bjorn, we get a small reason behind it. Cailee Spaeny continues her fantastic year with an excellent leading performance and David Jonsson is brilliant as her brother.

The most difficult thing any Alien sequel deals with, is being in the shadows of two of the greatest movies ever made. Directors have tried for years and most have some entertainment, but leaned way too heavily into the action. This captures more of the original and brings it up against the sequels as one of the best since the first two.

Final ThoughtsAlien Romulus returns to the bad ass ideas of the original.
