Alfonso the Hero

By Englishwifeindianlife

Something I have had to get use to now I live in India is sharing a house with these scary looking things…

gas cylinder india

Yup, that is just chilling in my living room.

These gas cylinders are usually battered and bruised, and I spend a lot of time sniffing around them to check for leaks. The more I think about it though, isn’t it a little more scary to have pipes of gas running through your home like we do in England? I would have to look for some statistics but perhaps that is even more dangerous!

For those who don’t know, we cook using these gas cylinders. I still haven’t learnt how to change one because they are pretty heavy and I fear being blown up (although I am sure that would be unlikely, better safe than sorry!).

Anyway, back to my story…

My husband goes away for business very rarely, but when he does I usually end up staying awake until the early hours watching movies with Alfonso. This particular time I thought I would try to honor my sleeping pattern and go to bed at the usual time. I was tucked up nicely, teeth brushed and face washed. Only one thing was missing, Alfonso.

I call him and he started barking from the kitchen, he only barks when someone is at the door or I’m eating something he wants, so this was strange. I was already settled in bed but he carried on barking and wouldn’t come however much I called him so I had to get up and see what his problem was.

There was my little friend sitting next to the gas cooker, looking up at me. Then I smelt it, I had gone to bed, leaving the gas on!! Alfonso the hero, I couldn’t believe be could be so clever!

I was really scared about sharing a house with gas cylinders, but now I realize they are safe if you are careful and don’t do something stupid like leave the gas on and go to bed!!
