“True Blood” exec producer Alexander Woo has set up a drama project at AMC that revolves around a 1963 murder in Birmingham, Ala., that reverberates in the present day.
“Bombingham” takes place in the city that was the epicenter of the modern civil rights movement. The storytelling will shift time frames between past and present to tell the story of a murder that is discovered 50 years later and threatens to upend the fragile peace in the city between whites and African-Americans. The title refers to the city’s nickname in the black community, which suffered a slew of racially motivated bombings and other violence from the late 1940s through the 1960s.
Woo is writing the script and will exec produce with Aaron Kaplan.
Last November we got the news that Mr. Woo was producing an HBO series, Headhunters, but it looks like he has more irons in the fire.
Also, HBO tapped Woo to pen the adaptation of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” based on the nonfiction tome by Rebecca Skloot. Alan Ball and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Prods. are shepherding “Immortal Life” as a telepic.
