The Alexander McQueen exhibit, Savage Beauty, which has been open at the Metropolitan Museum of Art since May, closes on August 7th and you MUST GO! The exhibit is absolutely incredible, and should not be missed.
Walking through the exhibit is like walking through a zoo, a Period Room in a museum, and a Renaissance art exhibit all at once. Sounds overwhelming, doesn’t it? Yeah, it really is.
With horns, bones, feathers, shells, and even worms used throughout the collections, “savage” really does feel like the only word to describe it. However, some pieces show McQueen’s softer side, lace instead of scales, chiffon instead of human hair. However relatively “tame” the pieces, they all maintain the same intensity, drama, and aggressiveness.
Each room appears to have a different theme. One looks vaguely like a Star-Wars movie set, one is similar to how I would imagine Alice’s walk-in closet in Wonderland. My favorite room by far is one entitled, Romantic Nationalism. Based on 18th and 19th century British and Scottish royalty, the room gives the impression of a palace dungeon, lit by eerie candles and covered in dark brown tiles. When If I become queen of England, can I please wear these clothes??
