I think of Alex Katz when I think of the hippest, and newest in a string of downtown hotels. I think of him when I think of post modernism, even though he’s embedded in the figurative, often not associated with the abstraction of the modernists. Was that a mouthful?
When I think of “modern art” what pops into my brain is his woman in the swimmer’s cap, or the novel Morningside Heights, which used his string of women in black as the book cover.
