True Blood’s creator, Alan Ball will be honored on Sunday, November 23rd and receive GET LIT’s Ignite Award to honor his work in television.
Get Lit, a leading non-profit presenter of literary performance, education, and poetry programs that affect the lives of over 20,000 teens each year, is hosting “The Poetry of Television,” a gala event to honor the poetic brilliance of today’s television writers to support teen literacy in Los Angeles.
Get Lit’s annual IGNITE award will be presented to Alan Ball (Academy Award-winning writer of American Beauty, Emmy Award-winning director and creator of Six Feet Under and True Blood). The event will occur on Sunday, November 23, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Stadium Club at Dodger Stadium, 1000 Elysian Park Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Tickets can be purchased at getlit.org.
This year’s event also will feature teen poets from all over L.A. County (the “Get Lit Players”), who will honor the writers and creators of The Good Wife, Transparent, Orange is the New Black, The Walking Dead, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, How I Met Your Mother, and Six Feet Under by performing original poems in conversation with clips from each show.
Writers from the shows will attend the event, as will as actors including Drea De Matteo (The Sopranos, Sons of Anarchy), Penny Johnson Jerald (Castle), Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead), and more. Additionally, priceless Dodgers’ packages will be auctioned off by the Dodgers’ own Ned Colletti.
“This special evening will pay tribute to one of the greatest writers of our generation, Alan Ball,” says Diane Luby Lane, founder of Get Lit. “’The Poetry of Television’ will be an amazing way to enjoy powerful performances, meet brilliant writers, and give back to the community,” she added.

Founded in 2006 in Los Angeles, Get Lit is a leading non-profit presenter of literary performance, education, and teen poetry programs. Get Lit uses the memorization and recitation of classic poetry as a launch pad for teen-created spoken word responses. The responses fuse the two forms of expression into compelling performances conducted by teens in school, after school, and through the organization’s own select group of Get Lit Players. These poet ambassadors from across Los Angeles perform both classic and spoken word poetry, inspiring fellow teens to read, write, participate in the arts, and be leaders in their communities. Each year, Get Lit reaches over 20,000 at-risk teens in more than 45 high schools, turning students into motivated scholars inspired to stay in school and thrive.
