This Virgin A340 approaches touchdown after the long flight from London. In August 2002, Virgin became the first airline to operate the Airbus A340-600 and currently operates nine of these aircraft and plans to remove them from service in the near future. Production of the type ended in 2011 after 377 were delivered and the market dried up with the transition to twin-engined aircraft such as the Boeing 787 for long distance routes. United operates a fleet of twelve 787-8 configuration aircraft in their inventory. With a typical capacity of 242 passengers and a range of 7,355 nautical miles, the -8 is the base model of the 787 family and was the first to enter service in 2011.
