A Lufthansa A340 cold soaks under a dusting of snow at Frankfurt Airport. The A340-300 is the most popular model of this airliner with Lufthansa once being the biggest operator of the type, having acquired 59 of which 14 are in operation currently. Production of the type ended in 2011 after 377 were delivered and the market dried up with the transition to twin-engined aircraft for long distance routes. Lufthansa plans to phase out the A340-300 in 2028. As of February 2026, there were 71 A340 aircraft in active service with 27 operators worldwide.
