During her time as a judge, Aileen Cannon presided over the case of Donald J. Trump v. United States of America from August to December 2022. Her ruling ordered the U.S. government to temporarily halt the use of materials seized from Mar-a-Lago in the investigation, while granting former President Trump's request for a special master to review the material.
However, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit reversed Cannon's order, stating that she had exercised jurisdiction over the case incorrectly. Following the Eleventh Circuit's instruction, Cannon dismissed the entire lawsuit.

From 2013 to 2020, Cannon worked as an assistant United States attorney for the Southern District of Florida. As a federal prosecutor, she handled various major crimes, including drug, firearm, and immigration cases. She later focused on appellate work, dealing with convictions and sentencings. Cannon played a role in securing convictions for 41 defendants, including four from jury trials.
In June 2019, Cannon was considered for a position as a United States district judge by Senator Marco Rubio. After expressing her interest, she underwent interviews with representatives from Senator Rubio, Senator Rick Scott, as well as officials from the White House and the Justice Department.
On May 21, 2020, President Donald Trump nominated Cannon, at the age of 39, to serve as a United States district judge for the Southern District of Florida.
