Agnus Dei

By None

A very beautiful Agnus Dei we have just received from a monastery. Agnus Dei can be traced back to St. Gregory the Great, who as Pope instituted the practice of blessing wax medallions and distributing them to the faithful. These medallions were intricately crafted from leftover wax of the Paschal candle, and mixed with the dust coming from the bones and tombs of martyrs. Several accounts exist about the miraculous protection associated with the Agnus Dei, due to their representation of Christ as the Sacrificial Lamb of God.
