The hit series Downton Abbey, upon which this parody graphic novel is based, has been nominated for 16 Emmy Awards in 2012, including an acting nomination for Brendan Coyle, who plays valet John Bates (a.k.a. Agent Gates). Our book will release in January 2013, in time for the premiere of season 3 in the U.S. While the Granville family dutifully entertain their guests at Devonton Abbey, an ace team of Secret Service agents camp out as unsuspecting household staff, protecting the Royal Crown and her citizens from impending world war.~synopsis provided by Goodreads
Who is aware of the international intrigue concealed below stairs? Will Agent Gates save Britain from her enemies while ensuring Devonton Abbey’s reputation is upheld? Will Lady Margaret secure a proposal from Martin Crawhill, the heir to the estate? Will Thompson and O’Malley ever get lung cancer?
I am a huge fan of Downton Abbey. I watched the first two series on Netflix in two days, avoided social media sites like the plague until I was caught up on series three, and I'll
When I found this, I was pretty excited. Yes, it's a parody, but I'm a lover of parodies. I grew up watching Mel Brooks movies with my father, it's kind in my blood. Anyway, I loved the character names and how they closely resembled the characters. Quite clever really. It also made it pretty easy to figure out who was who.
There were plot lines the resembled season one and overall I was amused. However, it was above and beyond a normal level of parody and satire. The puppy gets pregnant and Devonton is saved, Lady Ethel (Edith) falls in love with a Llama, and... well, that's about as far as I got.
I thought the concept was very interesting. The British Secret Service uses Devonton to help aid in international affairs and keep the Queen save and place agents into the roll of servants to the family, but it failed to live up to its premise.
The art is wonderfully done and captures the likeness of their Downton counterparts very well. If nothing else, it's pretty.
