Adventure on Kangaroo Island

Adventure on Kangaroo Island
As a newly discovered thrill seeker, I’m always on the lookout for destinations in Australia where I can test out just how brave I think I am. The answer to this for any of you wondering is pretty brave until it involves jumping from anything high which rules out skydiving, bungee jumping and pretty much anything else relating to heights that end in ing. But getting back on track, I think I may have found one of the best spots for adrenaline junkies, an island where there’s plenty of room for the kids to run around and play, and for the adults to try something a little out of their comfort zone.
Welcome to Kangaroo Island!

Sapphire blue waters surround the third largest island off the mainland of South Australia, just a short 45-minute ferry ride to Penneshaw, the town in which you dock. With its pristine white beaches, untouched natural beauty and wildlife haven, Kangaroo Island will be your perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. There’s a multitude of activities to do here, as well as an emerging winery scene and mouth-watering fresh local produce. But let’s uncover what you can do on the island starting on Little Sahara!

LITTLE SAHARA

Firstly, yes you read that correctly. Little Sahara is a 2 kilometer stretch of naturally formed sand dunes on Kangaroo Island that is perfect for, well you guessed it, sandboarding. You can hire out a sandboard or a toboggan however a tour of the island will usually make a stop here, and then all equipment is already included in the tour price. For those who are unsure what the difference is; tobogganing usually has you sitting or lying down while you slide down the big sandy hill, whilst sandboarding means you’ll need to stand up and surf down, perfect for that highly sought after adrenaline rush.

WATER ACTIVITIES

I say water activities because there are heaps of water-related sports that you can try on Kangaroo Island. The idyllic and calm waters of Vivonne Bay make the perfect location for surfers along a 509 kilometer coastline just waiting for you to take a dip in the crystal blue waters. You can even snorkel along the coast alongside the cute seals that line the rocks there. If you're dreaming of a peaceful journey along sunny waters, in the Harriet River, you’ll find kayaks for hire perfect for a self-guided tour where you can spot some the native birdlife that soars high above the water.

HIKING

For the hiking enthusiasts, both novice and expert levels, there are many circuits that you can take around the island. The walk to Admiral’s Arch is only 15 minutes return and is graded as easy level, taking you from the carpark down to a natural rock formation that has seals basking in the sun, waves crashing below. For the hiker who really wants a challenge, the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail is your best bet. Over 5 days, this 73 kilometer walk will take you through a spectacular journey of the islands best landmarks such as Hanson Bay, Admiral’s Arch and the Remarkable Rocks.
