Adeline Hotel – ‘Whodunnit’ album review

While Dan Knishkowy was writing the latest Adeline Hotel album ‘Whodunnit’ about the breakdown of a marriage, he realised he was actually pondering things on a wider scale – those connections between all of us. Putting together a band of talented friends, he got to work on creating on an all-encompassing collection of songs full of heart, hope and heartbreak…

The album opens with ‘How Did I Get So Lucky’, a laid-back pied with refined and restrained guitar work very much at its core. These gorgeous tones are accompanied by nature-inspired sound effects and Dan Knishkowy’s fragile vocals that ponder the works of the devil and how ‘I have my reasons’. The 6-minute title track follows with a sound that sways between The Antlers and Villagers: ‘I predict the best in everything, guess that only applies in summer, we’ve come to rely on each other’.

As you’d guess from the title, ‘Grief’ is a personal and poignant piece drenched in sadness: ‘Grief was coming and I knew it. There’s only one way and that’s through it’. ‘Egg On My Face’ continues with this plead to be saved amidst food talk and a powerful piece of self-reflection: ‘My ego was asking do I need to be kind?’ Dan talks about ‘feeling grateful and absurd’ on the Phil Elverum-esque ‘Isn’t That Enough’. while ‘I Will Let Your Flowers Grow’ is another introspective piece about moving on: ‘I will let your flowers grow, I will let myself go’.

‘Possible Lives’ is a short and sweet piece that closes the album with a tender touch. It’s this gentle touch that makes ‘Whodunnit’ such a powerful
