The Opposition demanded the Government to declare as to when the LP Gas, fuel and electricity would be made available to the public without interruption, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament yesterday.
He made this observation making a statement following the statement made by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He said that the government lost Rs.600 billion revenue for reducing the tax rates under this government. He added in addition the government failed to get refinancing loans at the right time so that the country is facing such a situation. He added that there is no issue with taking loans but the issue is as to where the government invests the money obtained by way of loans.
He said further that the government use the reserves to settle the loans. So the government has no money to get medicine, food and fuel. The Prime Minister asked us to understand the crisis situation in the country. “We understood it two years ago,” the Opposition Leader said. “That is why we asked the government to go for a debt moratorium”. But this Government did not do so. The Government should have gone to international institutions two years ago. That is the reason for this crisis situation.” He said that the Opposition has given its proposals to the government. They are nine in number but the government is not listening to them.
The people are in queues to buy fuel, LPG, food, rice and flour. The people are suffering today, the small and medium businessmen are lost, fishermen and the farmers are bankrupt. There is no point in apologising now. He added that the opposition is not contended by implementing the 19th Amendment to the Constitution repealing the 20th amendment to the constitution.
He added that the executive presidency should be abolished. He said the Premier should declare when the fuel and LPG is made available to the people electricity is provided without interruption.
