Adding Hardware to Cabinets? You May Need to Install a Parallel

If you really want to get into woodworking, you should start with a project that requires no power tools at all. If you are setting up additional hardware for you computer, you may need to install parallel or serial card first. If you need to add additional scanners, graphics tablet, zip drives, or printers and you have run out of ports, these types of expansion cards can be your solution. In addition, parallel or serial ports can take the place of existing ports that are no longer working.

Parallel or serial cards are expansion cards that plug into the motherboard and have one or two connector that will protrude from the back of the computer. The additional hardware that you are adding to the computer can connect directly to the plugs on the back of the cards.

The connectors that stick out of the back of the computer are referred to as parallel port adapters or parallel port connectors. The connectors are usually 25 pin female connections with small posts that allow the cable to be directly screwed into the cable.

The parallel ports have four modes that they can be set up in, standard, bi-directional, EPP, or ECP. Specific cables are required for the distinct modes. The exact hardware device that you are connecting will determine the mode and the type of cable that is required.

In order to install these expansion cards, you will have to check the motherboard for available slots. To do this you will need to turn off your computer and unplug it. Then you will need to remove the cover and check for PCI or ISA slots. If you are not sure how to identify these slots you may need to consult your computer’s manual for reference.

After you have purchased the appropriate parallel or serial card, you will need to install it into the proper slot. You will need to align the card with the matching PCI or ISA slot and make sure that the protruding ports are accessible from the outside of the computer in a way that you will be able to connect your hardware. 

You will then insert the card into the slot and push it firmly in place. Then make sure that the card is secure by screwing in the metal tab to lock it in.

You will then need to replace the cover and plug the computer back in. Then you will need to turn on your computer and wait for it to boot up. 

Then you should connect the hardware device to the new outside ports. You will then need to configure the ports and the new devices. Your system may automatically take care of this step for you. However, if it does not, you will need to access the computer Control Panel by going to the setting options. Then you will need to double click on adding new hardware. You should select the type of hardware you are adding from the provided list and then follow the prompts to install it and configure the ports.

Once you are finished with the prompts, you should restart you computer. Once the computer is restarted the process is complete and you should be able to use the new hardware.

One important factor to keep in mind when installing parallel or serial cards is that the IRQ setting does not interfere with any other device that might be using that port. IRQ’s are hardware lines that often need to be set up when a new piece of hardware is added. This is usually done by setting a DIP switch.  In addition, a unique address is required for each port that is set up with a serial or parallel card.
