New Saddle Creek signing Ada Lea has shared the video for ‘the party’ ahead of the release of her debut album ‘what we say in private’ on 19 July (pre-order here).
Hailing from Montreal, Ada’s sound is both intimate and powerful and this slow-building song offers the perfect introduction. Recalling the emotional atmospherics of early Bright Eyes, the three-minute song was written after Ada spent ‘a magical night on the town with close friends’. It’s a celebration of companionship and friendship as Ada recalls the events of the night: ‘Ditch the party in your beat-up truck, you’re always leaving when the night starts’; ‘Made a right turn for the freeway, stood on the porch watching you get away. And that night was a pure shade of honest’.
Ada then asks: ‘Was I wrong because I couldn’t tell the difference at all?’ with those final two words being repeated over and over again as the song veers towards its layered and evocative Hand Habits-style ending, complete with natural night-time noises.
