Budget accommodation in New York
Finding somewhere cheap and within easy reach of transport is always top of our list of to-do when sorting out a holiday.
After much searching, we came across Greenpoint Lodge located in the Greenpoint area of Brookkyn.
Greenpoint is on the G subway line and is a quiet but bustling neighbourhood. There’s a large Polish community here so lots of delis and you’ll hear a lot of Polish spoken.
Nassau Ave MTA subway station is about 10 steps from the front door. So grab a MetroCard (info here) and discover New York from the base of one of the boroughs.
Inside Greenpoint Lodge is like a hostel. I used to be apprehensive about hostels but it’s not all dorms and parties. There’s private rooms, some have enough-suite and (touch wood) in our ten years of traveling we’ve never had an awful hostel experience.
Our room had everything we needed. Fresh air, tv, storage and wifi. The temperature was comfortable. Lots of storage both cupboard and drawers. Plus a hairdryer and towels.
The bathroom was shared between three rooms. A shower/bath, sink, toilet and even cotton balls and magazines. Clean and tidy as well.
Also on our floor was a kitchen. Everything you would need. Kettle, cooker, fridge, microwave and crockery. Again all clean and tidy.
The floor below had another kitchen as well as a lounge. Books, magazines, cable tv as well as a Mac for Internet were provided.
We were very happy with Greenpoint Lodge. Clean, tidy and had everything we needed. The area was quiet but with lots of shops about and subway and bus on the doorstep.
