Accidental Shooting - Muskogen Man Pays Fine and Loses Gun

Local news reports
Norman Rashaad Young, 22, of Muskegon recently pleaded guilty to a reduced misdemeanor charge of reckless use of a firearm for accidentally shooting his girlfriend in the leg in their Amazon Building apartment April 29.
Young was sentenced to pay $275 fines and costs and to surrender his pistol to the Muskegon Police Department, according to court records.
On the day of Young's plea July 30, the original charge of careless discharge of a firearm causing injury, a two-year high-court misdemeanor, was dismissed.
What does "surrender his pistol" to police mean? Is that like forfeit his right to own a gun from now on, or do they think taking away this particular piece will accomplish something?
What do you think?  Please leave a comment.
