Two men were trying to disassemble a handgun Saturday at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore when the gun fired, striking one of them behind the knee.This sounds like the old "forgetting there's one in the chamber" mistake. I suppose it could have been a revolver for all we know. One thing for sure is the gun was not pointed in a safe direction.
The wounded man was taken to Porter Regional Hospital, where he underwent surgery Saturday night to remove the bullet, said Bruce Rowe, spokesman for the National Lakeshore.
The shooting, which occurred about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, remains under investigation, Rowe said.
As of Monday afternoon, no charges had been filed in connection with the shooting.
