About.me – a Free Webpage to Serve as an Online Identity Card

If you want to make a website for free, a quick googling would show you many different options available. You can even have your webpages using your Gmail or Yahoo account.

But most people don’t have any use of a full website. For them, here is a very nice option that I recently came across. It is called about,me page. About.me offers its users a webpage with many customization options. Basically about.me helps you to ‘build your personal page that points people to everything you do, all around the web.’

It gives you a webpage wherein you can add a nice background, your photo and introduction and list in all the links to your websites, blogs, and social networks. That gives you one compact address that you can spread around. And from this one address, your connections can visit all your various links. Thus, it can become a sort of online identity card carrying all the information about your online life.

Another thing I liked about it is that I can easily share my about.me profile on all my blogs by using the simple widget that WordPress offers. You can see it in the side bar of this blog as well.

The facility to add your photo and info, with all your important links on one profile page is also available with services like Gravtar, Google profile etc. But the about.me page looks much more like a professional website and gives you more customization options. You can customize the background, as well as the font of various sections. And the address you get for your page is short and sweet too. It’s just about.me/username. You can also add a profile picture to your profile intro on your page. However, unlike Gravtar, you can add only one picture, not more. Though you can set the background with another picture too.

And unlike your Google Profile that gets integrated with Google Plus, you can’t engage in social networking from here. It just gives you a nice looking home page that your contacts can visit to see all your weblinks at one place. Best of all, it is free and very simple to create.

about.me also offers you visiting cards with the look and address of your about.me profile. The cards are free, but the shipping isn’t though.

Here, for example, is the page that I have created for myself. http://about.me/JyotiArora
