The 16-year-old off-spinner Sharon Abhishek ended with impressive figures of 4 for 23 from his 7-over spell while opener Vishara Fernando (58) and Thamindu Pradeeptha (52) hit half-centuries as Richmond recorded a 37-run victory on a D/L method in their Under 19 Division One quarter-final cricket match against St. Anthony’s, Katugastota, played at Surrey grounds in Maggona yesterday.
Richmond led by Bhanuka Manohara was invited to bat first, making 198 all out in 48.3 overs while Anthonians chasing their target of 199 runs were reeling at 119 for 7 wickets in 33 overs when bad weather halted the game. However, when the game was resumed again with a revised target of 172 runs to win in 35 overs while Anthonians finally managed to get 134 for 9 wickets and Richmond marked a 37-run victory to enter the semi-finals.
Earlier, Richmond’s in-form opener Vishara Fernando and Tharindu Nirmal (10) added 30 runs in 6.1 overs while Fernando was more aggressive striking 6 fours and 3 sixes to get 58 runs in 68 balls. Skipper Bhanuka Manohara was out for a duck while 15-year-old right-hander Thamindu Pradeeptha made a valuable 52 runs in 77 balls hitting 6 fours and a six. Richmond made 165 for 4 wickets in 35.5 overs heading for a big total.
But Anthonian off-spinner who is also a well-experienced national under-19 bowler, Treveen Mathew came back strongly to take 4 for 32 in his ten-over spell. Richmond was all out for 198 with 1.3 overs to spare.
Anthonians made a slow start in their chasing while opener Mohammed Aaqil (31) and Asitha Wanninayake (33) made useful knocks but their skipper national under 19 all-rounder Chamindu Wickramasinghe was unfortunately out for just 2 runs facing 15 deliveries and the prize wicket was taken by off-spinner Sheron Abhishek and which was a huge blow for the Anthonians.
Abhishek who was among the wickets this season came back strongly to pick vital four wickets to put pressure on Anthonians while paceman Hansamana de Silva made a good supporting role with 2 for 36.
Meanwhile, right arm leg spinner Shane Adithya had impressive figures of 4 for 19 steering Maris Stella Negombo to beat Moratu Vidyalaya by 107 runs in their Division One quarter-final game played at Wijerama Mawatha yesterday.
Kavindu Amantha produced a superb all-round performance taking 6 for 38 and scoring 52 runs to guide Isipathana to an easy 46-run win over St. Sylvester’s, Kandy, in their Division One quarter-final cricket fixture played at Darley road.
