I first met Ice the Dog on October 22, 2014, when my friend tried to find him a home after rescuing him in Guimarães, where he was injured and hiding underneath a truck. At that time he was about five months old, around 9kg, had no name and was scared of his own shadow. Two days later, I convinced Paulo to take the puppy on a trial basis over the weekend. The main protest was that we lived in an apartment.
Fast forward one year later. We still live in an apartment. Paulo named the puppy “Ice”, and today he weighs in at more than 26kg!
Ice has had quite the year. It took more than a month, but he found the courage to venture out on the balcony. He’s made a lot of friends around the neighbourhood, and he loves to run and play with his cronies every day. Except when he was snipped in May and discovered the limitations of the Cone of Shame for the first time in his life, around a year old.
Ice has his naughty moments. He’s destroyed several pairs of slippers and at least five pairs of shoes, despite appearing remorseful after every single episode. He chewed up two pairs of glasses, a remote control, nearly destroyed my most expensive flash, and left teeth marks on The Kitty (mobile charger).
But we think we’ll keep him, anyway.
Ice loves road trips. We’ve taken him as far east as Spain and as far south as the Alentejo. He’s gone camping with us and sleeps in the car, on his own car hammock which is like his road couch.
And speaking of couch… as soon as he was allowed to go on the couch, it became his favourite place. Happy First Year on the Couch, Ice! Here’s to many more years with this funny dog!
I got 99 problems but to sleep ain't one. #IceTheDog #dreamland

Ice the Dog has his own hashtag in Instagram, which he shares with a few other dogs but most of the pictures are of him. Here are some from Ice’s Greatest Hits album:
