Our motley crew of travel buddies decided to go on a day trip to Minalungao National Park in Nueva Ecija. I have yet to visit the park and i was eager to hit the ground running once we got off the tricycle that took us there.
Exploring the Park
Nueva is known for its verdant rice fields as you drive through the province on your way to the northern provinces of the Philippines. The park is a popular destination for weekend getaway seekers as it was one bus ride and tricycle away from the bustle of Metro Manila.
The park is located at the center of the Peñaranda River; nature wrung her hands and carefully molded the scenic and picturesque limestone formations bordering the narrow river. The placid, green waters were enticing to swim in, many visitors took the plunge and jumped off some of the protruding rocks by the river.
Some tourists prefer taking a more scenic trip through the narrow river. The body of water at the center of the park was smaller than I expected, but it was still beautiful, the ruggedness of nature still manages to shine through despite the obvious development around it. The local government is looking to make it a premier destination, the area was quite busy with construction when we visited.
Other than the river, swimming and rafting, the park has other things to do, one of which is a short hike up the mountain.
It was scorching hot as we made our way up the mountain. The way up was paved already, making it easier for beginners.
At the top of the mountain was a glass cross; the cool breeze was refreshing after a short hike up.
The tired and resting group at the top of the mountain. There was also a small cave near the base of the mountain. We tried that as well, it was easy to get through and unlike many of the other caves I have been to.
How to Get to the Park
Ride a bus bound for Gapan in Cubao or any other station; the travel time will take approximately 2-3 hours. Once in Gapan, better rent a tricycle that takes you all the way to the park. We rented tricycles for around P600 each for the round way trip.
