The wonderful confines of a private Riverhouse room

What you are feeling is a “sense of place” that in part comes from being surrounded by the world’s oldest rainforest, the Daintree. A hammock awaits empty, on your private deck – every self contained house is literally surrounded by rainforest. Perhaps you are staying in one of the “Riverhouses” perched on a hill above the beautiful flowing Mossman River – with its clear deep water.

Sounds are natural, symphonic at times- the sharper notes from the cicadas, the gentle rumble of the river flowing over rocks and every now and then calls from any of a number of tropical birds. Then night falls and the mesmerizing sound of the river below and the crickets are what accompanies you as you fall asleep later in the evening.

Wake up when the jungle wakes up. The early morning is a great time for a quick dip in the river or perhaps to watch for wildlife on the property. With one end of the property bordering the National Park – you are sure to experience some of its neighboring wildlife. Guided walks are offered for resort guests in the evening.

And then their is the ‘pool’ – you can swim in a pool in the jungle but in reality it feels just like you are swimming within the jungle itself. Creatively designed, the swimming area and its small secluded pools are almost entirely surrounded by tropical plants. Even though the main part of the lodge is nearby, you feel like you are swimming in privacy.

When you are staying in a rainforest you want excellent food. Chefs here have previous experience at some of the top restaurants in Europe and beyond. Dining is on the deck overlooking the Mossman River. Specials, often involving seafood rotate daily. Desert is an experience – especially if you order the sorbet platter. Crocodile Cheesecake? Is there such a thing? Yes, and this is one of their entree specialties. Because of their location and access to fresh fruit, vegetables and other locally grown products, the restaurant works closely with a number of local producers.

Private dining options can also be arranged for those who want a more intimate experience on the edge of the river.

The intimate pool

The Mossman River is 4km from the ocean and at elevation – therefore it is safe for swimming as the crocodiles don’t make their way to this part of the river. Much of this part of the river is fed by always flowing spring water – as a result a dip here is refreshingly cool. Always check with reception for the latest swimming conditions.

A kayak and a canoe are available for guests – this is a great way to see part of the river downstream. The few glimpses of the resort soon disappear and you feel like you are all alone in the Daintree.

If the rainforest itself doesn’t immediately calm you, the Healing Waters Spa on site will certainly do so. The creative menu ranges from facials, foot care, spa treatment, mud baths and a number of massages. Each individual can have custom treatment depending on individual needs. Several rooms overlook the Mossman River below.

This family owned and operated lodge prides itself on its environmentally sustainable practices. They operate their own on site sewage treatment plant, recycle waste products, use organic amenities for cleaning as well as in room products and all water used on site is drawn from the Mossman River and then filtered and treated on site.

A number of room types are available. The Riverhouses are set high on the banks above the Mossman River. Poshly furnished, these are a cocoon of comfort for even the most discerning traveler. Want to enjoy the river as you fall asleep, simply open the main doors and then slide over the special mosquito net screens. A comfortable hammock on the deck is the perfect place to enjoy a good book. And call for room service for that Capirinha you’ve been wanting since you last visited Brazil – or any of a number of other drinks!

Suites and a number of “treehouses” set back from the river surrounded by rainforest are also available. There are no Televisions or WiFi access in any of the rooms. However, speedy WiFi is available in the main reception. It’s sole location at the lodge in fact helps create a community – especially in the evenings; it is the perfect place to meet your neighbors.

However, activities do abound. The lodge can arrange any of a number of tours to the nearby Daintree, a private float down the Daintree River, helicopter tours (the heli pad is only 5km away) or trips to the world famous Great Barrier Reef (located just offshore).

This lodge is a destination in and of itself. A visit here is absolutely the perfect respite from the day to day grind of normal life and a welcoming escape for busy individuals. Do as little or as much as you like. Many find a few books and then spend much of their time in the cozy confines of their private home.
