A Savoury Feast at Smorgasburg...

By Boberika @boberika

It's not often I post on the weekend, but there are a few more posts left on my trip to NYC (told you I had alot to post about!), then it's all about Christmas. I love December in London as it's the season of fancy shop window displays, giving, thinking about others, eating and a month of celebrations...

I only have foodie posts left on NYC and I have saved the best ones to last. For my write up on Smorgasburg there is a double post, so I'll be posting about the sweet treats tomorrow. Hopefully these will inspire you to try something different this month.

Smorgasburg is an open-air market held every Saturday in an empty lot on the Williamsburg waterfront. I wanted to see how it compared to the likes of Bricklane, Broadway and Borough Markets and other outdoor markets around London. At Smorgasburg, There were more than 50 vendors selling handmade food from stalls next to the East River and another 40 or so selling produce, kitchen gear and pantry items. It’s orderly but informal, you eat standing up, or at one of a few tables and there's a nifty Smorgasbar in the middle if you fancy a drink. We opted for the frayed public lawn which was lovely in the sunshine.

This blog on Smorgasburg is going to be a 2-part series, as I have so many photos to show you! So part one is the savoury stuff and coming all the way from London, I had to make sure I tried a variety of American streetfood, which wasn't hard as the portions were small, but the downside was they came at a very hefty price. For me, the weather and location were certainly a highlight, but I think the market lacked the quirky style and people of London town. Call me a harsh critic but after being spoilt by such wonderful markets in London I have high standards.

However, the food did taste delicious and I tried to eat things which aren't so commonly available in the UK such as fish tacos from Choncho's tacos, Fried claims from Shuck's Clam?, fried anchovy's from Bon Chovie, a pulled pork combo bun from Baby Got Back Ribs, King's Country jerky, grilled scallops from Life Aquatic and empanda's from La Casa De Camba to name quite a few delicious morsels!
