As we've mentioned before, if you do it correctly, the world of whisk(e)y can take you on an around-the-world journey of taste without ever leaving the comforts of your own home. In just the last nine months, our whisk(e)y journey has taken us to Kentucky, Tennessee, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.
Today's episode of A Tasting at The Murder Table takes us back to Ireland for a taste of some Irish Whiskey from Barr un Uisce (pronounced Bar on Ishka), one of the newer Irish Whiskey makers that hail from the town of Redcross in Ireland's County Wicklow.
Barr an Uisce currently distributes four expressions throughout the United States:
- Wicklow Hills, Blended Irish Whiskey
- Wicklow Rare, Small Batch, Blended Irish Whiskey
- 1803 Single Malt, 10 Year Old Irish Whiskey
- 1803 Single Malt, 16 Year Old Irish Whiskey
We decided to pick two of the four expression samples that Barr an Uisce was kind enough to send us. Here's a bit of information about the two that we picked:
Wicklow Rare, Small Batch, Blended Irish Whiskey: Our signature blend with its perfect combination of grain and malt to a 43% ABV is complex, pure and up-lifting. This reflects the native Wicklow spirit shaped over the past five hundred years through our rich and complex heritage, landscape, community and culture.1803 Single Malt, 16 Year Old Irish Whiskey: Limited edition 16 year old single malt matured in first-fill Kentucky bourbon barrels. Only 1803 bottles produced and all numbered by hand (46% ABV). This special whiskey displays all the hallmarks of extended wood aging. The 'cereal' character of the malted barley has melded with the flavours and aromas of the white American oak (Quercus Alba) and shows the sweet vanilla, toasted coconut and caramelised notes of the charred wood.Given his heritage, we consider Limpd to be our Irish Whiskey expert (his ancestors were from Ireland's County Cavan), so getting his thoughts on what sound like two decidedly different Irish Whiskeys is what really motivated us to gather for this review.
