A Review of Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky

By Boozedancing @boozedancing

If you love whisky as much as we do, then you're well aware that Scotland, Ireland, and the good ole US of A aren't the only countries in the world producing top notch whisky...

Back in the early years of this century (2006 or 2007?), we discovered the joys of Japanese whisky at the first big whisky event that we attended. Yamazaki 12 and Yamazaki 18 is what we had, and we gotta admit, it was love at first sip. Yamazaki led us to Hakushu which led us to Hibiki which then led us to Nikka.

We thought we had the inside track on Japanese Whisky, but as many of you know, interest grew around the world and so did the price, and now, it's tough to find the stuff that started us on this path, and if you do find it, you better be prepared to cough up some cash. We remember when Yamazaki 12 was $60 and Yamazaki 18 was $90. Those were the days!

Thankfully, Nikka still makes a few expressions that are available in the USA and won't totally drain your piggy bank. One of these whiskies is called Nikka Coffee Grain Whisky.

Here's what Nikka has to say about it...

The Coffey Still is the world's first patented continuous still invented by Mr. Aeneas Coffey in 1830. Masataka Taketsuru valued the feature of this type of still, which retains the flavors of ingredients and also creates a distinctive texture. Coffey Grain and Coffey Malt are Nikka's signature grain whiskies which show the beauty of our Coffey Stills.Coffey Grain is predominantly made from corn and distilled in a Coffey Still. The complex, sweet and mellow flavors of this expression will help you re-discover the beauty of a grain whisky.
