The speaker from h…
Picture the scene. A well- meaning pulpit secretary settles her or himself back in the pew to listen to the celebrity speaker whose services they have secured. The pews are fuller than usual because lots of people want to hear what they have to say. As the speaker opens her mouth, a vitriolic tirade comes pouring out, making everybody squirm.
This is just what happened at a school in Southampton this week. After a phenomenally expensive refit and re-branding the TV celebrity former pupil at the opening ceremony was meant to be the icing on the cake. Instead, she talked all bout how the school had turned her into a vile teenager and crushed her aspirations. Lurid descriptions followed of the anarchy which reigned in the classrooms and the early onset of criminality. Of course the reports are peppered with juicy soundbites, rather than giving a verbatim account of the full contents of the speech. Maybe the parts are tempered by the whole; maybe not. Either way, the speaker, the speech and the person who invited her will not be forgotten any time soon.
If you have invited a preacher to your church tomorrow, they may embarrass you for all the wrong reasons – sloppy technique, crude jokes or a lazy attitude. On the other hand, they may embarrass you for all the right reasons – incisive comment, prophetic insight and canny application.
Hope you are embarrassed tomorrow…
