A Preview of The Emmys

Posted on the 18 July 2013 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES:

Breaking Bad
Downton Abbey
Game Of Thrones
Homeland
House Of Cards
Mad Men

I predicted that FX’s The Americans would sneak in over Downton Abbey, but the Emmy love for Downton Abbey knows no bounds apparently.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES:

Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Hugh Bonneville, Downton Abbey

Damian Lewis, Homeland

Kevin Spacey, House Of Cards

Jon Hamm, Mad Men

Jeff Daniels, The Newsroom

I had predicted that this would be the year that Walking Dead would finally break through with a nomination for Andrew Lincoln, and also that they would recognize Kevin Bacon’s work on The Following. Instead, they picked my wild card, Jeff Daniels, as well as renominating Hugh Bonneville for Downton Abbey. I at least correctly predicted that Steve Buscemi would stop getting nominated for Boardwalk Empire.

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES:

Vera Farmiga, Bates Motel
Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey

Claire Danes, Homeland

Robin Wright, House Of Cards

Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men

Connie Britton, Nashville

Kerry Washington, Scandal

Did the voters get screeners for The Americans? Keri Russell failed to get a nomination here, and instead they surprised me with Robin Wright and Connie Britton (there’s a 7th nominee this year, I predicted 6). Also snubbed… Julianna Marguilies for The Good Wife, and my wild card, Tatiana Maslany for Orphan Black.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES:

Bobby Cannavale, Boardwalk Empire

Jonathan Banks, Breaking Bad

Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad

Jim Carter, Downton Abbey

Peter Dinklage, Game Of Thrones

Mandy Patinkin, Homeland

I’m really surprised they missed Corey Stoll in House Of Cards (but nominated Robin Wright…). I also wish they had recognized Jeff Perry for his awesome work on Scandal. Instead, they tapped Bobby and Jim.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES:

Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad

Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey

Emilia Clarke, Game Of Thrones

Christine Baranski, The Good Wife

Morena Baccarin, Homeland

Christina Hendricks, Mad Men

WOW… they left off Monica Potter? Ummmm….

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES:

Nathan Lane, The Good Wife

Michael J Fox, The Good Wife

Rupert Friend, Homeland

Robert Morse, Mad Men

Harry Hamlin, Mad Men

Dan Bucatinsky, Scandal

I only got two right here. They left off Ray Romano’s showy arc on Parenthood (seriously, did they watch the screeners?), and they left off Jimmy Smits for Sons of Anarchy. One of the best shows of all time, and the Emmys are allergic to it every year.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES:

Margo Martindale, The Americans

Diana Rigg, Game Of Thrones

Carrie Preston, The Good Wife

Linda Cardellini, Mad Men

Jane Fonda, The Newsroom

Joan Cusack, Shameless

It’s good to know that those Americans screeners arrived. The biggest surprise here is the omission of Shirley Maclaine for Downton Abbey, along with Martha Plimpton and Stockard Channing for The Good Wife.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES:

The Big Bang Theory

Girls

Louie

Modern Family

30 Rock

Veep

HBO’s struggling Veep beat out Parks and Recreation.

OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Jason Bateman, Arrested Development

Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Matt LeBlanc, Episodes

Don Cheadle, House Of Lies

Louie CK, Louie

Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock

Snubbed: Jake Johnson, The New Girl. Thankfully Snubbed: Jon Cryer, Two and a Half Men

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Laura Dern, Enlightened

Lena Dunham, Girls

Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie

Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

Tina Fey, 30 Rock

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

This is pretty predictable set. I’m surprised they snubbed Zooey Deschanel.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Adam Driver, Girls

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family

Ed O’Neill, Modern Family

Ty Burrell, Modern Family

Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live

Tony Hale, Veep

I can’t even begin to list all the actors more qualified for this category than Adam Driver. I suppose if Community was on HBO, it would be sweeping the nominations. I’m surprised Eric Stonestreet missed out on a nomination, but I guess they just rotate through the Modern men. Also, they again snubbed The New Girl and left off Max Greenfield. I also thought this would be the year for Simon Helberg to break through.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory

Jane Lynch, Glee

Sofia Vergara, Modern Family

Julie Bowen, Modern Family

Merritt Weaver, Nurse Jackie

Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock

Anna Chlumsky, Veep

I’m not terribly disappointed here. No major snubs. Just some minor ones. I would definitely swap Melissa Rauch for either Lynch or Weaver, if given the chance.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Bob Newhart, The Big Bang Theory

Nathan Lane, Modern Family

Bobby Cannavale, Nurse Jackie

Louie CK, SNL

Justin Timberlake, SNL

Will Forte, 30 Rock

I thought they’d take the Robin Williams bait, but they didn’t.

OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Molly Shannon, Enlightened

Dot Marie Jones, Glee

Melissa Leo, Louie

Melissa McCarthy, SNL

Kristen Wiig, SNL

Elaine Stritch, 30 Rock

Really? Did Dot Marie Jones do anything this season on Glee?
