Tuesday morning heaven got a new angel. Talia Castellano lost her fight with Cancer. My oldest daughter really looked up to this girl and I wanted to give her a chance to share her feelings about this. At first she wasn’t sure if she wanted to blog, but she decided she would and then she even went one step further.
This weekend we were planning a tag sale and lemonade stand. She has decided that she wants to give a portion of the proceeds from the lemonade stand to BASE Camp Children’s Cancer Foundation which is a charity that was close to Talia’s heart. I couldn’t be more proud of her for making this step and for sharing her feelings on this very sad death.
I myself have had my own emotions around this considering this girl was the same age as my oldest. Seeing 1999-2013 is a knife to the heart because this could be my daughter. But I didn’t think it was the time to share my sorrow. I wanted to hear from my daughter and give her a chance to express her feelings. So without further ado here’s my 14 year old talking about her thoughts on the loss of a typical American teenage girl who she probably would have had a blast talking about boys and makeup tips with.
Thoughts From A Teenager
I woke up on Tuesday morning with an odd felling in the pit of my stomach. But I brushed it off. I never would have thought that a girl that I looked up to and prayed for EVERY day, could possibly have passed away.
At about 11:30 Tuesday morning, I got the shocking news. Talia Castellano passed away at 11:22 a.m. What shocked me the most was that she was getting better. She started eating, drinking, and talking more. So this was a complete shock to me knowing that she would no longer teach girls and adults new makeup tips or how to stay strong when life throws you obstacles.
Talia Castellano was a 13 year old girl who had cancer. Actually, she had two types of cancers in her body: neuroblastoma and preleukemia. Both are very aggressive forms of cancer. But she fought bravely for nearly 7 years.
She was a spunky girl who never gave up. Even when the doctors said that she had 4 months to a year to live. She just kept on fighting. She inspired so many children, teens, and adults to be brave even when it seemed impossible to do so.
Because of having cancer, she lost her hair. But her slogan was, “Makeup is my wig.” She never really cared for wearing wigs. She never felt comfortable. So she turned to makeup to make people stop looking at her bald head. And it worked.
She started teaching people on Youtube, how to apply makeup and different techniques With the help of her millions of fans, she got to meet Ellen DeGeneres. It was one of the many things she had hoped to do. Ellen asked her how she could possibly stay so brave. Her cute reply was “A little fishy once told me to just keep swimming.”
At the end of the show she was announced an honorary Covergirl. At that moment, she won everybody’s hearts. She was a role model for lots of people and lots of people will miss her. She has defiantly left her foot prints on the world. Just as she wanted.
Although Talia died of cancer, cancer has in no way beat her. Talia kicked its butt with a smile on her face. Because of her having cancer, she got to do things most teenage girls would never be able to do.
Talia will be missed dearly, by me and everyone around the world. To me, she was my role model. She taught me so many things that I could never have thought that a 13 year old girl could have taught me. I will always think of her during my everyday life. Because of Talia, I will never take life for granted.
Talia, fly high. And know that you will forever be loved and missed.
Yes, fly high you beautiful angel. You are gone, but never forgotten, in the hearts of millions.
Please, lets help Talia’s dreams come true. One of the many footprints she has left was her charity BASE Camp Children’s Cancer Foundation. If you can find it in your heart please make a donation to them in her name. If you are unable to give financially, then please pass this along. Get the word out there. Lets give BASE Camp Children’s Foundation our support.
